ICARE

The ICARE Thematic Center was created in 2003 by CNES, CNRS, the Nord-Pas-De-Calais Regional Council, and the University of Lille, to provide various services to support the research community in fields related to atmospheric research, such as aerosols, clouds, radiation, water cycle, and their interactions. ICARE's initial emphasis is the production and distribution of remote sensing data derived from Earth observation missions from CNES, NASA, and EUMETSAT. One of ICARE's main components is the Data and Services Center, located at the University of Lille, which develops science algorithms and production codes, building on the expertise from various partner Science Computing Facilities, and distributes products to the users community.

On September 13, 2018 CALIPSO will begin lowering its orbit from 705 km to 688 km to resume formation flying with CloudSat. The sequence of maneuvers is expected to take about a week and the payload instruments will be turned off (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), Imaging Infrared Radiometer (IIR), and Wide Field Camera (WFC)). Normal science operations are anticipated to begin in late September with public data availability around October 10, 2018.

The 2nd Workshop of the International Cloud Working Group (ICWG) will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, USA from 29 October to 2 November 2018. The workshop aims at enhancing cloud retrieval schemes and their applicability and a better characterization of their validity. Experts working with cloud parameter retrieval schemes from passive imagers, passive microwave, and lidar and radar observations are invited to participate in the workshop and to contribute to the workshop’s cloud parameter inter-comparison and validation activities. More information on registration and submitting abstracts will follow in the second announcement.
