IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The University of Lille 1 is closed from July 29 to August 20, 2017. User support will be disrupted during that time due to reduced staff. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Data Access

Access to the Megha-Tropiques data is subject to the Data Policy below. All users must register beforehand. Registered users can access the data through the Catalogue, the Archive Web Interface and the FTP server. ICARE provides a web interface to visualize browse images associated with the data products.

Catalogue interface
picture catalogue
The on-line catalogue provides direct access to the data and availability of each data set as a function of time. It displays the sensor and product name, the product version or collection, and the product description. Dynamic calendars are also available for each data set with a color code showing data availability.

Archive interface
picture archive
The "archive" interface provides a web-based FTP-like access to the data, more user-friendly than plain FTP access. Data sets are shown exactly as they are stored on disk (see "Archive tree structure" description below).

FTP access
picture ftp
The on-line archive is available using FTP either from a terminal:
ftp ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr
or from your web browser:
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE
ftp://<user>@ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE
ftp://<user>:<password>@ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE
<user> = registered user name
<password> = registered password
URLs may include a full path that reproduces the archive tree structure to access a specific sensor, product, and date (see "archive tree structure" description below).
Example:
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE/SAPHIR/MT1SAPSL1A/2012/2012_07_06
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE/SAPHIR/MT1_L2-UTH-SAPSL1A2.v1.00/2012/2012_07_06
ftp://ftp.icare.univ-lille1.fr/SPACEBORNE/SCARAB/MT1_L2-FLUX-SCASL1A2.v1.00/2012/2012_07_06 (for L2-FLUX and L2B-FLUX)

Browse Images
picture browse MT
Megha-Tropiques browse imagery associated with SAPHIR and ScaRaB "Segment" L1A2 products is available through a dedicated web interface.

Archive tree structure
picture tree struct
All data sets are archived by sensor, product ID, year, and day, following this convention:
<instrument>/<productID>/<YYYY>/<YYYY_MM_DD> where:
<instrument> = SAPHIR, MADRAS or SCARAB
<productID> = MT1MADSL1A
MT1SAPSL1A
MT1SCASL1A
MT1_L2-UTH-SAPSL1A2
MT1_L2-FLUX-SCASL1A2
MT1_L2B-FLUX-SCASL1A2
(see product list in Products section).
<YYYY_MM_DD> = Date (Year, Month, Day)

Data Policy

Level-1 Data

SAPHIR and ScaRaB Level-1A and Level-1A2 data products are publicly available and distributed in the ICARE Catalogue. Version v1.06.7000 (until July 7, 2015 ) and v1.07.8000 (starting on July 8, 2015) are assembled in Collection 2 and provide a consistent product archive. V1.06.7000 includes a minor bug correction to improve the completeness and v1.07.8000 a scan time stamp correction (See the CNES document Level-1 version history).
Earlier versions v1.05 and v1.06 of SAPHIR and ScaRaB data products (Collection 1) and versions v1.02, v1.03, v1.04 (Collection 0) should not be used any longer. Versions in Collection 1 includes calibration revisions and a gain change for ScaRaB. Versions in Collection 0 are based on interim radiometric and geometric calibrations and should be used with caution and primarily for qualitative use.

In a joint communiqué in September 2013, ISRO and CNES announced that the MADRAS instrument has been declared non-operational and that as of January 26, 2013, MADRAS Level-1 data is not valid and will not be disseminated to users. The 16-month archive of valid data (from mid-October 2011 to January 26, 2013) are publicly available from the ICARE archive (ISRO and CNES, joint communiqué, October 20, 2015).

PIs of all approved projects accepted the ISRO/CNES Terms and Conditions for the Utilisation of Data, summarized here:
  • The data are to be used only for the purpose specified in the AO and are not to be distributed without the prior permission of ISRO/CNES. Also, this data is supplied free of cost purely for scientific research and it should not be used for any commercial and operational applications
  • The PI will make available salient results to the scientific community through publications or other established channels and acknowledge ISRO/CNES support in all reports and publications arising out of his/her project
  • Any print of the ISRO/CNES data/products should carry the copyright mark "© reserved ISRO/CNES"
  • The PI is required to submit annual progress reports and a final detailed report at the end of the project
  • The PI must maintain an inventory of data products received/obtained under the AO project(s) and the data products must be deposited with the home institution after the end of the project

Tools

A variety of visualization and analysis tools support the Megha-Tropiques standard formats including free software such as hdfview (HDF4 and HDF5 support), HDFLook (HDF4 support), and ncview (NetCDF support).

In addition, tutorials and examples to read Megha-Tropiques files are available on ICARE's tool page or ICARE's wiki.

Additional routines can be found on the Megha-Tropiques science web site.
